Pro-Stride Joint Therapy

Allen Equine is excited to announce that we now offer Pro-Stride as an excellent steroid-free option for the treatment of joint pain and inflammation!

Benefits of Pro-Stride

  • ProStride maintains healthy cartilage by using the body’s own anti-inflammatory proteins and healing factors to improve joint health and reduce pain, avoiding the chronic negative effects of steroids.
  • Pro-Stride often lasts longer than traditional joint injections, generally at least 1 year (although the longevity does depend on the severity of joint disease).
  • While ProStride is an excellent option for any horse, it can be particularly helpful for horses with Metabolic Syndrome or Cushing’s (PPID) when you have to be very careful about using steroids for the risk of laminitis.
  • ProStride can be a great option in young horses that you’d prefer not to use start using steroids in at such a young age.
  • There is no withdrawal time for its use (other than you cannot inject a joint with any substance within 4 days of competition).

How Does Pro-Stride Work?

Pro-Stride is derived from your horse’s own blood that is collected into a unique vial system and spun down. This concentrates several anti-inflammatory proteins and healing factors to reduce the pain and inflammation that occurs with joint arthritis. When injected into a joint, it binds to inflammatory proteins and prevents them from causing further damage to the cartilage.

This can all be done on your farm within 30 minutes!

Why Do We Need an Alternative to Traditional Joint Injections?

Our routine joint injections use a combination of hyaluronic acid (a component of joint fluid that helps to lubricate the joint) and a steroid (this reduces the inflammation caused by arthritis). This is a common option for many horses, but there are several negative impacts of steroid use. Over time, steroids can have negative impacts on the joint cartilage, worsening arthritis. They can put some horses at serious risk for developing laminitis (horses with Metabolic Syndrome or Cushing’s/PPID).

What are the Risks?

As with any joint injection, there is a very small risk of causing secondary inflammation (joint flare that lasts for 24-48 hours) or contamination causing joint infection. We make all efforts to maintain sterility during this process, but the possibility can never be completely eliminated.
